Nevada Museum of Art

DICE 2014 is a multi-disciplinary design conference in northern Nevada demonstrating that great design empowers individuals, inspires the masses, and enriches entire communities.

The event takes place September 18th, from 2-7pm at The Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W Liberty St, Reno, NV 89501.

This year, DICE 2014 will dive into the intricacies of the idea of “craft”: its history, misconceptions and future in the world of design.

As designers, the history of our individual professions all started with the notion of craft. In current times, architects input lines into computers, graphic designers work with typeface on the computer, lighting designers use lighting software to calculate light levels. This may seem to be a far reach from the idea of “craft” as creating something by hand, with care.

Designers of today may not have the same slow, methodical, perfect hand we associate with craft, yet all the lines that we put to paper or screen are in the pursuit of a unique idea or object. Although the process of creation may be different from the products of the past, a work of art or a profound idea still requires a high level of skill, attention to detail and craft.

The event’s honored guest speakers include:
Tom Kundig, FAIA, Olson Kundig Architects
Charles Stone, IALD, Fisher Marantz Stone
Jim Stickley, ASLA, LEED AP, Wallace Roberts and Todd

The schedule for the event is as follows:
2:00pm Registration
2:30pm Jim Stickley, ASLA | Wallace Roberts & Todd
3:30pm DICE 2014: CRAFT Design Competion Presentations and Inaugural DICE Award
4:30pm Break
5:00pm Charles Stone, FIALD | Fisher Morantz Stone
6:00pm Tom Kundig, FAIA | Olson Kundig Architects
7:00pm DICE 2014: CRAFT Reception

This year, DICE challenges designers to answer the question:

How could you use your craft to make Reno a better place?

Entries can be in the form of a video or a slide presentation. Entries are due one week prior to the event on Sept 11, 2014 and will be judged by featured speakers Tom Kundig, Charles Stone, and Jim Stickley.

The top ten entrants will have the opportunity to present their idea to the conference attendees. The winner will be the nucleus of a kickstarter campaign where DICE will help raise funds to make your idea a reality.

DICE celebrates and advocates the value of good design. Well designed objects, images, and spaces have the power to empower an individual, inspire the masses, and enrich a whole community.

Our mission is to advocate good design and the positive effect on our community. Please contact us if you would like to be involved by contributing or participating.
